He's scored 26 goals in 13 games. The real story is what happened off the pitch

There are not many superlatives left when it comes to Alex Fiechtner. His numbers are just that good.
Actually, they are outrageous.
The Lions FC striker has scored 26 goals, yes 26, in just 13 matches in NPL QLD this season. Let that sink in. The next best in the Golden Boot race has 14.

After scoring five goals in an extraordinary week-12 performance, Fiechtner backed it up with a hat-trick last time out.

Fiechtner is a Lions FC legend. He is also a name synonymous with Queensland football but he is soaring to completely new heights in 2026.
So, what’s the secret? A recent diagnosis has helped keep the NPL star on the field while taking him to another level.
Speaking to HIGHPRESS, the 27-year-old said: “A few things in the past year have definitely changed my physical and mental approach to football.
“Towards the end of the season last year I spent a bit of time out as I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. After hearing this I knew that if I wanted to continue playing football I had to adjust certain aspects of my lifestyle.”
“I put it down to building a good off season regime, switching up nutrition habits and continuing that through the season. I also became a father at the end of last year which has been the most influential change. It has had a calming effect on me and has really aligned priorities.
“Without those things I don't think I would be in this situation.”
In Fiechtner’s words, he is playing with confidence that he “probably lacked” previously.
It sounds staggering when you consider what he has produced over the past five years.
115 goals in 127 matches for Lions FC since 2021.
Fiechtner, who also spent time at NPL VIC powerhouse Oakleigh Cannons, was crowned NPL QLD’s best player in 2022. He is the favourite to repeat that feat again this year.
A dominant attacking force in Queensland’s top flight, with pace, precision and a wicked left foot.
He has the silverware to match, too. Two Championships, and a Premiership with Lions FC.
With a CV like that, the question is - why isn’t Fiechtner playing in the A-League?
It would be a struggle to find a more lethal striker over the past five years.
Shockingly, Fietchtner said he has never had interest from outside the NPL but currently at the peak of his powers, the left-footed talisman still harbours ambitions of playing professionally.
“I've probably only started to hit my straps as a striker this year,” he said. “Previously I played predominantly as a winger and maybe I just didn't fit the profile that teams were after.
“This year it's probably been a bit tougher to take as it's taken me until I was 27 years old to really become the player I knew I could be. I feel like I'm in the best physical shape of my career so I believe I'm doing the right things.”
“I still have ambitions and goals so hopefully I can just keep putting out performances each week and you never know what can happen.”
