Sleeping giants are third in their promotion hunt. They just changed coach

Bankstown City are chasing promotion in Football NSW League One. Instead, they’ve hit the reset button.
After Friday night’s loss to the Newcastle Jets, the four-time NSW champions parted ways with head coach Fabian Miceli.

Bankstown are third in Football NSW League One - the state’s second tier. They are two points outside the promotion play-off spot and six points adrift of league-leading Blacktown City through 15 rounds.
This is a club with history. A sleeping giant of the NSW game. Bankstown haven’t played in the state’s top flight since 2011. They even spent four seasons in the third division between 2018 and 2022.

Now, with the club finally pushing back toward NPL NSW, the stakes feel bigger than ever.
“We are immensely grateful for Miceli’s efforts in the opening half of the 2026 season, granting First Grade opportunities to over a dozen Lions youth products and steering us to the Maso Cup final in Melbourne in pre-season, and we truly wish Fabian all the best for the future,” Bankstown City said in a statement.
“Club digital channels will inform of the changes to our coaching structure and the confirmation of the relevant new appointments in the coming days.”
