The title race just got crowded in Western Australia
By Sacha Pisani31 May 2026

For much of the season, Perth RedStar looked like a side capable of running away with the NPL WA premiership. Not anymore.
The league leaders surrendered a two-goal advantage in a 2-2 draw with Fremantle City on Saturday, dropping points for a second consecutive week and opening the door to the chasing pack.

What was once a comfortable lead has shrunk to a single point. More significantly, just four points now separate the top four sides.
RedStar appeared in control at Hilton Park after Liam Murray and Jacob Evans exchanged goals and assists to establish a 2-0 lead before half-time.

But Fremantle fought back. Riley Woodcock's superb free-kick halved the deficit before Nick Ambrogio pounced late to secure a deserved point and extend City’s unbeaten run to four matches.
The comeback set the tone for a remarkable round in which five of the six matches featured a team recovering from a losing position to claim a result.
Olympic Kingsway were among the biggest beneficiaries.
In their first home match under interim coach and former Socceroo Richard Garcia with ex-Australia international Neil Kilkenny by his side, Kingsway came from behind to defeat Dianella White Eagles 3-1 and move within a point of the summit.
Ben Hinshelwood gave Dianella an early lead before Liam Boland continued his outstanding season with a third consecutive game on the scoresheet.
The contest swung dramatically before half-time when George Ballah was sent off, leaving the visitors with 10 men. Kingsway capitalised after the break through Joe Hobson and Bryce Bafford to claim all three points.
Bayswater City remain firmly in the hunt after Chris Jackson's stoppage-time header secured a 2-1 win away to Sorrento.

The defending champions sit third, two points behind RedStar.
Perth Azzurri climbed into fourth courtesy of one of the games of the season, defeating Western Knights 4-3.
Knights raced into a two-goal lead through Kosta Sparta and Aaron Pike before Azzurri hit back. Gordon Perkins played a decisive role throughout the contest and ultimately scored the winner late in a seven-goal thriller that extended Perth's unbeaten run to four matches.
The victory lifted Azzurri above Western Knights and to within four points of first place.
Elsewhere, Stirling Macedonia continued their strong campaign with a 3-1 victory over Balcatta Etna.
At the foot of the table, Armadale produced a vital comeback of their own.
Two goals down against Perth Glory, Armadale fought back to win 3-2 through a Luke Desmond brace and a winner from Will Hayes, moving to within three points of safety.
