From Lions junior to the A-League: Cher Deng’s pathway comes full circle

Cher Deng’s 2026 began with a return to the club where his football journey started and it ends with a professional contract following his move to Perth Glory.

The 21-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal with Perth after a remarkable season with Queensland high flyers Lions FC that underlined the pathway from Australia’s state leagues to the professional game.

Deng’s connection to Lions stretches well beyond this season. He came through the club as a junior, progressed through its Academy and was playing U23 football by 17 before later joining Central Coast Mariners’ Academy and spending a season with Balestier Khalsa in Singapore.

His return to Lions ahead of 2026 proved transformative.

The 194cm centre-back established himself as a key member of a side that won the Kappa Pro Series, NPL Queensland Premiership and Kappa Queensland Cup, while making history with a first Australia Cup semi-final appearance.

It was on the national stage that Deng particularly caught the eye.

He was named Player of the Match as Lions knocked Perth Glory out of the Australia Cup and also impressed in victories over Melbourne City and North Sunshine Eagles. Across those three matches, Deng won 83 per cent of his aerial duels and recorded 30 clearances and 40 defensive contributions.

His Lions farewell was fitting. Deng scored the final goal in the 4-0 quarter-final win over North Sunshine before leaving the field to a standing ovation from more than 2,700 supporters.

Perth had seen enough.

“He was a standout performer when we played Lions FC in the Cup and again when they played Melbourne City,” Glory Football Director Stan Lazaridis said.

Deng added: “It’s a proud moment for myself and my family and I just can’t wait to get into the work and get started.

“I want to be able to test myself and see if I can prove myself at full-time professional level again. I’m a very passionate player, I’m looking forward to playing for the club and I’m going to give everything for the colours and the city.”

For Lions, Deng’s rise represents exactly what their pathway is designed to achieve: junior football, Academy, senior NPL and, ultimately, the professional game.
