Favourite son returns but can he oversee the great escape?

Guess who’s back, back again? Andy Vargas is back, tell a friend.

Green Gully have appointed their former captain as the NPL VIC giants fight to avoid relegation.

The Cavaliers are bottom and still looking for their first win of 2026 as they languish at the foot of the standings - an extraordinary run of form that prompted the dismissal of David Chick.

And Green Gully have turned to one of the league’s most decorated players in Vargas, who spent 11 years with the Cavaliers as a player between 2003-2014. During that time, he wore the captain’s armband and won four Victorian Premier League titles.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be back,” he said in the Cavaliers announcement, having previously served as an assistant coach at NPL rivals Avondale SC.

“Twenty years ago, I was here under the legendary Ian Dobson. It was an amazing time. To come back now as a coach is a complete honour and privilege.

“First and foremost is the endeavour and pursuit to give everything.

“To leave everything on the pitch. Not walk off knowing you could have given more. That’s a big one for me.”
