He restored Melbourne Knights' place among the elite. The fight to stay there - and unleash a rising star - is just beginning

Michael Calandrella has signed a new deal to remain Melbourne Knights head coach for the 2027 NPL Victoria season and beyond, having masterminded the former NSL powerhouse's immediate return to the state's top flight.
The Knights were a wounded giant when Calandrella arrived at Somers Street - relegated from NPL VIC, one of Australian football's most historic clubs faced the prospect of rebuilding their reputation outside the state's premier competition.
But promotion specialist Calandrella needed just one season to turn things around.
In his first campaign at the helm, the Knights secured promotion from VPL1, restoring their place among Victoria's elite and earning their coach the competition's Coach of the Year award.

"Knights are back where they belong," Calandrella declared following his renewal.
Now comes the challenge of keeping them there.
Knights have backed their promotion-winning coach to lead the club's next chapter, with establishing themselves in NPL Victoria among the immediate priorities in 2027.
But the task extends beyond simply avoiding another relegation.
There is also the exciting prospect of unlocking another level in homegrown star Luka Kolic.
The 21-year-old returned to his boyhood club from Melbourne Victory in 2026 and played a pivotal role in their promotion, scoring 10 goals to finish just one behind teammate Joshua Divin.
It was another impressive chapter in the young attacker's rise.
During his time at Victory, Kolic won the Leigh Broxham Medal as the club's best NPL player, helped secure promotion to NPL1 for the first time in a decade and produced a viral rabona that earned Goal of the Year honours.
His return to Somers Street brought renewed confidence and attacking flair, including a remarkable five-goal burst across two VPL1 matches.
Now, under Calandrella's guidance, Kolic has the opportunity to translate that form into NPL VIC and establish himself among the competition's premier attacking talents.
It represents one of the most intriguing challenges facing the Knights in 2027: ensuring their return to the top flight is sustainable while continuing to develop players capable of making a genuine impact at that level.
