Melbourne Knights will return to NPL VIC as champions after wrapping up the VPL1 title before even taking to the pitch this weekend.
Knights, who secured promotion back to Victoria's top flight last week, were confirmed as 2026 VPL1 champions following results elsewhere on Friday night.
They are still due to play on Sunday, but the championship is already theirs, completing an emphatic response to the disappointment of relegation just 12 months ago.

For one of Australian football's most decorated clubs, dropping out of NPL VIC at the end of 2025 represented a significant low. What followed was a period of change at Somers Street, with a new committee and Michael Calandrella arriving as senior coach ahead of the new campaign.

Calandrella came to the Knights with a strong track record in Victorian football, having already overseen two promotions before being handed the task of leading the club back to the top flight.
His first season has now delivered both promotion and a championship, with Joshua Divin and Luka Kolic spearheading their campaign with 10 goals apiece.
Rather than allowing relegation to become the beginning of a prolonged rebuild, Melbourne Knights have spent just one season in VPL1 and will return to NPL Victoria in 2027 with silverware and renewed momentum.
It represents an important first step in a new era for a club with a significant place in Australian football history.
The two-time NSL champions have experienced considerable change since their days competing at the summit of the national game, but the expectation surrounding Somers Street has never disappeared.
That made an immediate response to relegation particularly important.
Promotion was the primary objective. Finishing the job as VPL1 champions adds an exclamation mark to a season that has restored some of the optimism around the club.
