Sasa Ognenovski has made the jump from NPL VIC to the A-League after being appointed head coach of Macarthur FC.
The former Socceroo and Asian Footballer of the Year will take charge of the Bulls for the 2026-27 A-League Men season, signing a deal through to the end of 2027-28 following the departure of ex-Australia international Mile Sterjovski.
It represents a significant next step in Ognenovski’s post-playing career, and another link between Australia’s state leagues and the professional game.
Most recently, the 47-year-old has been working as Football Director and assistant coach at Preston Lions, playing a key role behind the scenes during the Victorian club’s return to NPL VIC.
Now, the legendary Preston figure’s next challenge will come at the highest level of Australian domestic football.
“It is a privilege to be working at the highest level of football in Australia, and I understand the responsibility that comes with representing this club, its supporters and the wider community,” Ognenovski said.
“After speaking with the people involved, it became clear that we share the same desire to build a strong football program, establish high professional standards and create an environment in which players can perform and develop.”

Ognenovski arrives at Macarthur with an extraordinary football CV.
The imposing former centre-back represented Brisbane Roar, Adelaide United and Sydney FC in the A-League, but some of the defining moments of his career came abroad.
He captained South Korean giants Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma to AFC Champions League glory in 2010, with his performances earning him the prestigious AFC Asian Footballer of the Year award.
Ognenovski also represented the Socceroos 22 times.
Since transitioning away from playing, he has remained immersed in the game and has most recently been part of the football operation at Preston.
His time at BT Connor Reserve has coincided with an important period for the Lions, who returned to Victoria’s top flight at the end of 2024.
Preston have since made an immediate impact back in NPL Victoria, while also ending a 32-year wait for Dockerty Cup silverware with victory over Heidelberg United.

Ognenovski will now leave the state league environment behind for an opportunity to lead an A-League club.
“Bulls fans can expect relentless effort, total commitment and an entertaining brand of football,” he said.
“We will play forward with bravery and purpose.”
