Oscar Gonzalez. Remember the name.

The teenage sensation has been lighting up NPL NSW this season, and he was at it again on the biggest stage on Saturday night.

Gonzalez scored the match-winning goal as APIA Leichhardt took down rivals and league-leading Sydney United 2-1.

It was a statement result at Lambert Park, where APIA leapfrogged Sydney United atop the standings. It was also another example of Gonzalez’s rapid rise in Australian football.

The 17-year-old has scored four goals in his last four matches., including a brace against SD Raiders. He has five goal to his name this season, with just four starts in those 14 appearances.

He announced himself in November last year. At 16 years old, he came off the bench and scored a 98th-minute equaliser in the first Australian Championship quarter-final.

This is a prospect whose potential senior debut was delayed for over three months after an ankle break, while he was pulled out of an Under-20s game at half-time after a first-half hat-trick to drive across town to play for APIA’s first grade.

Now, A-League teams are apparently sitting up and taking notice.

Central Coast Mariners, Brisbane Roar and Macarthur FC are reportedly interested.

It is easy to see why at the moment.
