'Transformative' tenure ends after 6 'historic' years in SA

It is the end of an “historic and transformative” era at Eastern United following the departure of head coach Gabriel Markaj.

Markaj has stepped down due to personal reasons following six years with the State League 1 club in South Australia, where he reshaped the Eastern United’s identity both on and off the pitch.

Arriving just two weeks before the 2021 season under difficult circumstances, Markaj inherited a club facing uncertainty but quickly steadied the Saints, guiding them away from relegation in his debut campaign and laying the foundations for future success.

Despite the challenge of spending the entire 2022 season away from home, Markaj famously led Eastern United to the Federation Cup semi-finals, highlighted by a historic upset victory over Campbelltown City.

The pinnacle of his time at the club arrived in 2025 as Eastern United produced one of the most memorable seasons in club history. The Saints secured both the Premiership and Championship titles, scored 78 goals in just 21 matches and sealed promotion back to State League 1 on a memorable night at Service FM. His achievements were recognised with the Coach of the Year award.

"Gabriel's commitment and drive for our club has never been in question," said Eastern United president Belinda D'Apice, with the team in the process of appointing an interim coach.

"His positive energy and enthusiasm is highly infectious. Gabriel is passionate for overall club greatness, rather than personal gain, and this is one of his endearing qualities.

“He took on his role and elevated our standards to the absolute highest level, culminating in our incredible double-trophy and promotion success last year.

“We are incredibly grateful for everything he has achieved and built here over the last six seasons. We completely respect his decision to step down, and he leaves the role with the utmost respect and best wishes of everyone at the Saints."
