Port Melbourne Sharks have appointed Scotsman David Thomson as head coach until the end of the VPL1 season as they fight to avoid consecutive relegations.

The Sharks - who sit bottom of Victoria’s second tier - have turned to Thomson after parting ways with Adam Inglese following a tumultuous week, which ended with an 8-0 humiliation at the hands of Eltham Redbacks.

Thomson arrives at SS Anderson Reserve from NPL NSW giants APIA Leichhardt, where he was part of the club’s 2025 coaching staff that guided APIA to a runners-up finish, while also contributing to the club’s Australian Championship campaign with Wests APIA.

The former professional footballer, who holds Scottish FA and UEFA coaching credentials, brings a wealth of experience from professional and semi-professional environments throughout Scotland, Norway and Australia.

And he is tasked with preserving Port Melbourne’s VPL1 status following their relegation from NPL VIC in 2025, with the Sharks languishing at the foot of the standings.

“Widely respected for his professionalism, leadership and player development philosophy, David arrives at Port Melbourne focused on building a strong football culture and driving long-term success both on and off the pitch,” Port Melbourne said.

“We are excited to welcome David to the Sharks and look forward to the next chapter under his leadership.”

Port Melbourne have only won two of their 12 matches this season, and host Melbourne Victory on Saturday.
