Preston Lions punched their ticket to the Australia Cup Round of 32 for the first time in their storied history after demolishing NPL VIC rivals Caroline Springs George Cross 6-0 in a brutal Dockerty Cup statement on Wednesday night.
Preston tore through George Cross to not only secure a long-awaited place on the national stage, but also book a spot in the Dockerty Cup semi-finals.
Jonas Markovski and Lleyton Brooks both struck twice in the midweek rout, while Gian Albano and Jamal Ali also found the net as Preston delivered one of the performances of the midweek cup action.
While Preston celebrated a historic breakthrough, there was heartbreak for 2022 Australia Cup semi-finalists Oakleigh Cannons.
The NPL VIC leaders suffered a stunning 2-1 extra-time defeat to second-tier Brunswick Juventus in a midweek boilover.
Meeting for the first time in 14 years, Oakleigh were sunk by Sean Ellis - a Heidelberg United legend, who scored the 111th-minute winner in the Dockerty Cup quarter-final.
Brunswick Juventus will now face fellow VPL1 outfit FC Bulleen Lions in a play-off for a coveted spot in the Australia Cup proper.
In NSW, Sydney Olympic completed a dramatic comeback to avoid one of the great boilovers against third-tier Fraser Park.
Fraser Park stunned Olympic by racing into a 2-0 lead through Ben Astudillo and a spectacular strike from Francis McAlpine, threatening a famous upset.
But the NPL NSW giants responded with three unanswered goals, capped by Daniel Wong’s dramatic 90th-minute winner to seal passage into the Round of 32.
APIA Leichhardt also advanced after edging rivals Rockdale Ilinden 1-0 thanks to a first-half penalty from rising talent Oscar Gonzalez.
Meanwhile, Sydney United continued their proud cup pedigree with a dominant 4-0 victory over Blacktown City FC at Landen Stadium.
Mason Wells opened the scoring with a stunning seventh-minute strike before Kyle Cimenti doubled the advantage shortly after with a header.
Wells grabbed his second before half-time and Carlos De Oliveira capped the emphatic display late as Sydney United secured a ninth Round-of-32 berth — extending their record as the most successful NPL NSW club in the competition’s history.
Sydney United, Olympic and APIA joined SD Raiders FC in reaching the Waratah Cup semi-finals.
