Sydney Olympic have never been here before. Now comes the fight back

Sydney Olympic have vowed to rebuild and return to NPL NSW at the first opportunity after the former NSL powerhouse were relegated for the first time in their proud history.
The historic drop was confirmed following a 1-0 defeat to Marconi Stallions, consigning one of Australian football’s most decorated clubs to the second tier in 2027.
Olympic invested heavily in a bid to avoid the drop, signing Panos Armenakas and star Polish goalkeeper Filip Kurto from the A-League, however, it was not enough to preserve their NPL NSW status.

It represents a remarkable fall for a club that was NPL NSW premiers as recently as 2022 and claimed the premiership-championship double in 2018.
Olympic have now addressed the setback in a statement to members, players, coaches, volunteers and supporters, taking responsibility for a campaign that has ended with an unprecedented relegation.
“To our Members, Players, Coaches, Volunteers and Supporters, the confirmation of our relegation from the NPL Men's NSW competition marks a sad and painful moment for Sydney Olympic,” a statement read.
“It is a hard result to accept for a Club with our history and standing in Australian football. We know this news lands heavily on everyone who has stood behind Club.”
“Ultimately, we have not repaid that support. The plain truth is that we have not been good enough. We must now face the consequences of that failure with honesty, transparency and a determination to repair, refocus and rebuild.

“We will be back. Our commitment to this club, this badge, and this community does not change because of where we finish on a ladder. We have listened. We take responsibility. We have identified where change was needed, and those changes are being implemented.
“We are already turning our full attention to preparing a squad and program capable of returning Sydney Olympic to the NPL at the first opportunity, with renewed energy, stronger structures, and a clear vision for the future.
“We do this together. Now, more than ever, we need unity. Whatever debates or frustrations this season has surfaced, they matter less than the strength we have when we stand as one club, one family, one Sydney Olympic.”
“We are a Club whose unique identity is defined not by success or failure on the pitch, but by the values and traditions of our roots and by the spirit of the people who have Blue and White in their hearts. The Club acknowledges how challenging this season has been for them, and knows it must take steps to restore a sense of pride, faith and belief.
“To our members and supporters, thank you for your loyalty, your patience and your presence home and away, week after week. To our volunteers and staff, thank you for everything you do behind the scenes to keep this club running.
“This is a setback, not the end of the story. We ask every member of the Sydney Olympic family to stand with us as we begin the work of coming back stronger.”
“Thank you for all those who have reached out already in support. We will be back. Together.”
Olympic’s history extends well beyond the state leagues. The famous blue and whites were two-time NSL champions and remain one of the most recognisable names from Australia’s former national competition.
Now comes an unfamiliar challenge.
